Tools: The Hands of Your AI Team

Your Clone (Claude equipped with your voice, your knowledge, and your priorities) and its Agents (specialist workers it can call in) need more than good ideas. They need hands. Tools are those hands: the means to actually do things in the world, not just think about them.

Thinking versus doing

There is a clean split at the heart of the system.

Skills hold the know-how: what to do and how to do it well. Tools hold the means: the actual ability to read a file, search the web, or hand work to a teammate.

A Skill without hands is a plan no one can carry out. Tools are how the plan becomes real work. Each Agent is wired with the hands its job needs.

The standard hands

Every Clone and Agent comes with a core set of hands. Here are the plain ones.

HandWhat it lets the worker do
Memory handsRead and write the memory it is allowed to touch.
File handsRead your non-sensitive files, the ones kept on your own machine.
Research handsSearch and read the web to check facts.
Dispatch handsHand work to another Agent, or Tag-In your Clone (your signal to put your Clone on a task).
Builder handsCreate and improve Skills and Agents.

A few notes on these.

Memory hands respect the rules. Routine, reversible notes are written freely. Anything foundational or permanent waits for your sign-off first. (That sign-off step is the Review Gate, the checkpoint where proposed changes wait for your yes.)

Builder hands are special. Only the builder Agent can create new Agents and brand-new Skills. That keeps the team tidy and deliberate, never a sprawl of half-made parts.

Three kinds of memory

When we say "the memory it is allowed to," here is what that memory looks like. Every store has the same three levels.

LevelWhat lives there
ActiveCurrent reality: your goals, your profile, the plan in progress. Read first, every time.
AdaptiveThe catch layer: new signals, open questions, things still settling. Light and reversible.
ArchivalDurable, confirmed truth. Rare edits. Nothing lands here without your confirmation.

The plain hands above can read and write across these levels, but the bar rises with the level. Active and Archival truths are never silently overwritten.

The principle: hands are wired, never worked around

Here is the rule that keeps this honest.

If an Agent needs a hand to do its job, it gets that hand. A missing hand gets wired in, by you or by the builder Agent.

What it never does is route around a gap. No hunting for passwords. No poking at your machine to manufacture access it was not given. If something is blocked, you hear about it plainly, with options.

We say it simply: no access is a Report, not a workaround.

Tokens and compute: a gauge, not a gate

Running an AI team uses tokens and compute, the raw fuel of the work. We measure that spend. We do this so you have visibility and control.

But measuring is not blocking. The meter never stops your progress. A heavy run is a signal to work smarter, not a wall.

And it is always reported beneath the number that actually matters: Human Hours Saved, the real point of the whole system. The fuel gauge sits below the destination, never in front of it.

Today, and where it is headed

The research hands can search and read the web for facts today.

The hands that capture from your live tools, your email, calendar, and documents, are being built. Capture and the daily cycle run daily today, and are built to go continuous when live connectors and scheduling arrive. The hands are designed for that future and switch on the moment it lands.

The system is built on Anthropic's platform. The capability is ready; the always-on version is the design, not yet the default.
